Let’s Not Get to Know Each Other Better

“This was a weird choice, as I’m not sure I know anyone who has ever had a real date. Most elect to hang out, hook up, or Skype long-distance relations. The idea of a date (asking in advance, spending rent money on dinner and dealing with the initial awkwardness) is far too concrete and unnecessary.”

“Casual is sexy. Caring is creepy.

Interesting essay. The second quote is sad, but true for a lot of young people navigating the dating scene.

Green Development? Not in My (Liberal) Backyard

“Nimbyism is nothing new. It’s even logical sometimes, perhaps not always deserving of opprobrium. After all, it is one thing to be a passionate proponent of recycling, and another to welcome a particular recycling plant — with the attendant garbage-truck traffic — on your street. General environmental principals may be at odds with convenience or even local environmental consequences.”

NIMBY is an acronym for the phrase not in my back yard. Although I get why people would oppose measures that inconvenience them, how can the world improve when even die-hard supporters won’t make a sacrifice for progress?
